Understanding the Highly Sensitive Person Way of Being

Have you ever been told you’re “overly emotional,” “take things too seriously,” or are “too sensitive”?

Do you absorb the emotions of others, feel overwhelmed in busy environments, need more time to recharge or notice details that others seem to miss?

Perhaps you’ve spent years believing there was something wrong with you because you experience and process the world more deeply than those around you.

What if your sensitivity isn’t a weakness, but a valuable trait that deserves to be understood?

Being a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) isn’t a diagnosis or disorder.  It’s a naturally occurring way of being in the world found in approximately 15–20% of the population. Highly sensitive people have nervous systems that process information more deeply, making them exceptionally perceptive, empathic, intuitive and conscientious. At the same time, this depth of processing can also mean they become overwhelmed more easily when life feels too fast or demanding.

Understanding your gift of sensitivity can be the first step toward working with it rather than against it.

What Is a Highly Sensitive Person?

The term Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) was introduced by psychologist Dr. Elaine Aron to describe individuals who naturally process experiences more deeply than others.
When I saw the description for this workshop many years ago, I was drawn to it immediately.  Listening to the speaker, it felt like my life’s experience was being both totally understood(by me) and validated (by her) at once!

Being highly sensitive doesn’t mean you’re emotionally fragile. Rather, your nervous system is more responsive to both internal and external experiences.  You think, feel and process very deeply.

This heightened sensitivity may influence how you experience relationships, work, parenting, decision-making, creativity, stress and physical environments.

Many HSPs have spent much of their lives trying to become less sensitive when, in reality, they may simply need different ways of caring for themselves and regulating their nervous system.

Signs You May Be a Highly Sensitive Person

Every highly sensitive person is different, but many recognize themselves in experiences such as:

  • Feeling overwhelmed by busy environments, crowds or constant stimulation
  • Needing quiet time to recharge after social interactions
  • Being deeply affected by conflict or criticism
  • Noticing subtle details that others overlook
  • Feeling emotions intensely
  • Absorbing the moods of people around you
  • Becoming overstimulated when juggling too many responsibilities
  • Having a rich inner world and vivid imagination
  • Being deeply moved by music, nature, art or meaningful conversations
  • Thinking carefully before making decisions
  • Feeling emotionally and physically drained after prolonged stress

Many HSPs also find themselves taking on roles of the helper, listener or caregiver in relationships because of their natural empathy.

Why Highly Sensitive People Often Experience Burnout

Living in a fast-paced, demanding world can be exhausting for a nervous system that processes everything more deeply.

Highly sensitive people often spend years pushing themselves to keep up with expectations that don’t reflect our natural wiring.

Over time, this can lead to chronic stress, emotional exhaustion, difficulty setting boundaries, people-pleasing, perfectionism, anxiety or burnout.

The challenge isn’t sensitivity itself.

It’s living in a way that constantly asks your nervous system to bypass its own needs.

The Nervous System Connection

One of the most overlooked aspects of being highly sensitive is the role of the nervous system.

Highly sensitive people often notice that they become overwhelmed more quickly by noise, busy schedules, emotional intensity or constant demands. Their nervous systems may take longer to recover after periods of stress, making regular rest and regulation especially important.

This does not mean that your nervous system is broken.

It does mean it processes experiences differently.

Learning how to understand and support your nervous system can make a remarkable difference in how you experience and manage daily life.

Therapy Can Help You Work With Your Sensitivity

Many highly sensitive people come to therapy hoping to become less sensitive.

Often, therapy helps them discover something more meaningful.

Rather than trying to eliminate sensitivity, therapy can help you understand it, honour it & develop the capacity to navigate life without feeling chronically overwhelmed.

Together, we can explore:

  • How your nervous system responds to stress
  • Emotional regulation & resilience
  • Healthy boundaries
  • People-pleasing & perfectionism
  • Self-compassion
  • Relationship patterns
  • Burnout recovery
  • Anxiety & overwhelm
  • Building a lifestyle that supports your natural temperament
  • Reconnecting with your strengths instead of viewing sensitivity as a limitation

Sensitivity doesn’t need to disappear for life to become more manageable. It’s what makes life so meaningful.  It’s a blessing and a challenge, but the blessing far outweighs the difficulties.

Sensitivity Can Become One of Your Greatest Strengths

When supported well, highly sensitive people often bring extraordinary qualities to their families, workplaces and communities.

Many are deeply compassionate, thoughtful, intuitive, creative and emotionally insightful.  They often build meaningful relationships, notice what others miss, solve problems thoughtfully and bring a depth of presence that enriches those around them.

The goal isn’t to become someone else.

It’s to build the capacity to thrive as the person you already are.
